Becky Simmermacher paints landscapes that are neither ground, nor distance, nor sky or water. Most of the work’s viewpoint is eye level but the shapes can represent multiple points of view within one composition. Flat tones and vivid colors combine with patterns that invite and direct you through and around the entire work. There's not a dominant focal point, just a cluster of organic shapes and color to enjoy. The saturated color palette is energetic and exciting thus suggesting a playful and welcoming environment. The style is primarily representational with fauve neo-expressionism tendencies. Instead of the artist doing Plein air or still-life paintings, she finds her source material from the internet, common elements in our environment to form landscapes. The color may be local or deliberately independent of the local or light-influenced color of objects. Curiosity and discovery are triggered by the arrangement of overlapping forms, emotive color, and size relationships within a crowded “environment". Her work is represented through ArtsConnectLex.org. Becky Simmermacher was born in Columbus, OH where she received her B.F.A in painting. After receiving her M.F.A in painting at Washington State University, she moved to Lexington, KY where she has resided for over 40 years. During her time in Lexington, she has worked as a practicing artist and graphic designer for the University of Kentucky. Now retired, she devotes her time to family, art and gardening.
